Shadows of the Past

Let the shadows of these High Kings rest in their old cities and temples. The forest has long recovered this glorious civilization which now lays in ruins. Such is the fate of human endeavors: to flourish and perish.

Cave Paintings

Dating back to the 1st century BC, the Dambulla cave temple is still functional and remains the best-preserved ancient edifice in Sri Lanka. These paintings recover the ceiling of the largest of the five caves composing the complex. They are still in pristine condition !
It is told that King Valagambahu was exiled from Anuradhapura and sought refuge here from South Indian usurpers for 15 years. After reclaiming his capital, the thankful King built a temple in the caves were he spent these years hidden.

Small Dagoba

There are dozens of Dagobas in Anuradhapura. This is Thuparama, which is not as gigantic as the one depicted on the previous post.
But the remaining old pillars, which were part of an older and much bigger temple, show us that it was not always the case...

Despite being hundreds year old, the Ruwanweliseya Dagoba, in Anuradhapura, is one of the tallest Buddhist "stupa in the world. Culminating 92 meters above the ground, it's taller than most medieval cathedrals !
Don't confuse this dagoba with Dagobah, homeworld of Master Yoda.

In those places where people live in proximity with apes, you can easily shoot a picture such as this one.

Monks are not the only inhabitants of the lost city of Anuradhapura... Monkeys are more numerous ! This one is observing the activities of the faithfuls who are offering some flowers to the sacred Bodhi Three.

Another lost city, Anuradhapura, remains an important Buddhist center. Here, a novice is sited on the remains of an ancient temple, studying some mantras with the hope of becoming a monk very soon.

Sri Lanka !

Welcome to Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon !
Marco Polo once described the island as one of the most wonderful place in the world. And wonderful it is indeed ! The coast is fringed with idyllic beaches, while extensive populations of monkeys, elephant and leopards roam the interior jungle, which reclaimed old cities abandoned centuries ago.

The Buddha statue depicted here stands in the ruins of Polonnaruwa, once one of the main centers of Buddhist scholarship in Asia !

Back to the Temple

A few weeks ago, I when to Dublin for a bachelor party, and I spent a few minutes staring at this bar, drawn by the atmosphere. The place: Temple Bar street, the center of Dublin's nightlife. It's always happening something and I could have spent hours observing the people.
When I pressed the shutter, I didn't realized that, three years ago when I visited Dublin for the first time, I already shot a photo of the very same bar.
At least, I can now prove that I am constant in my choices !

Standing in the Circle

In the Saint Lazare railway station, I watched this man who was clearly waiting for someone, while all the other people were rushing around him to catch their trains. Was he waiting for his girlfriend ? Maybe she was late.
The irony is that he was standing in the middle of a giant clock.
